Florida School of Holistic Living

The Florida School of Holistic Living (FSHL) is a 501c3 nonprofit educational organization with the mission of cultivating sustainable community by empowering individuals through philosophy-in-practice education that promotes holistic living.

FSHL programming includes a comprehensive curriculum of natural health and sustainable living workshops, continuing education, and professional training.  In addition, FSHL provides the Central Florida community with a space to develop relationships, build vibrant health, and deepen their relationship with the earth, through their Bodhi Garden, Community Herbal Clinic, Moon Circles, and ongoing special events.

FSHL’s philosophy-in-practice education offers students the opportunity to “get their hands dirty” while emphasizing a holistic philosophy that honors the whole person and their connection to their environment. Additionally, they seek to put that philosophy into practice through hands-on educational opportunities, taking students into the field to connect viscerally with the subjects they are learning. By empowering students with the knowledge and experience to live a more fulfilling, sustainable lifestyle, FSHL hopes to contribute to a more equitable, peaceful world for future generations.

The Sacred Science

In October of 2010, a documentary was filmed at Paititi. Produced by Nick Polizzi, the film, The Sacred Science, has generated critical acclaim and helped tremendously in bringing our message to the world.

The Sacred Science exposes the formidable power of nature to heal us, as well as the need to protect the precious traditions, medicinal plants and foods indigenous to the Amazon. Following eight individuals who came to our Peru center for a healing retreat, the film shows a remarkable journey into the unknown that gives hope for the future of us all.

Since the film’s debut in 2011, we have been sharing this film in film festivals and public screening around the world. The response has been very positive and we are inspired to see that the world is truly open and receptive to the ancient healing wisdom presented.

We feel honored and blessed to share deeper education with the global community about the Amazonian healing traditions.and thrilled that our message has the opportunity to grow and reach more people.

Shiang New York

This jewelry piece, drawing on the design of our DNA as well as the mythos of the cosmic serpent, was inspired by the artist’s time at Paititi.  A portion of every sale goes to benefitting the Institute. DNA contains the clues to our origin as living beings. DNA may be compared to a set of blueprints, like a recipe or a code, since it contains the instructions needed to construct other components of cells. The formation of DNA presents a perfect, serpentine double helix. It is easy to see how the energetic mind is connected to the grander whole, and how it so effortlessly makes graceful connections between the basic building blocks of data and the manifestations of the natural world.

The snake is a unifying force embodying infinite messages to those who are energetically available to receive them.

About the founder, Shannon Shiang

Born to Chinese parents on the progressive western coast of the United States, Shannon Shiang came into this life straddling the worlds of eastern philosophies and western modernity.  This duality in her upbringing has created a unique life perspective that allows her to quickly bring balance to events and situations that for most seem incongruous (e.g. pursuit of spiritual ascension and western success simultaneously).  Her unique persona now thrives in the modern mix of “clashing philosophies.”

One only needs to take a brief glance at her adult life to see the fruits of her upbringing. Today, Shannon lives in New York City as a jewelry designer, while continuing to be a student of Permaculture at the Paititi Institute for the Preservation of the Environment and Indigenous Culture. She has learned to use her experience and knowledge of the beneficial effects and healing powers of indigenous South American plants and herbs to more effectively manage the pressures and stresses of her career. Through her blend of a western lifestyle and permaculture practices, Shannon has managed to bring her adult life back into the same balance she was born into.

Leading by example and living in harmony and balance has caused many people to describe Shannon as “a bridge between the material worlds, and the spiritual and esoteric worlds.”  Acting as this “bridge” has now become Shannon’s life passion, pursuing her own career while at the same time utilizing her spiritually-inclined learnings to teach and empower others to live healthier, happier lives and ultimately leave the world a better place.
